Little Miami River Trail

Posted in

The Little Miami River Trail system, that starts just outside of Cincy, is a great trail for a family ride (visit the LBC website for a nice link).

It's a true rail-to-trail system, with very slight grades and some nice scenery. From Loveland to Springfield, which is about 60 miles, the vast majority of the trail is shaded with trees on both sides (thank goodness!).

Most of the pavement is in very good condition, with only a few bumps (from trees roots underneath) or crumbling asphalt along the way.

There's plenty of opportunity for camping along the way (we choose the Hampton Inn in Springfield) as well as canoeing.

We stopped for ice cream in Milford, if I remember the name correctly, and I think that sits right next to Ceasar State Park, where the August 24th race is to be held, so you could actually ride the trail on your mountain bike, and veer off for some off-road riding.

The distance between towns is anywhere from 7 to 15 miles, so there's plenty of opportunity for snacks (and picture taking) along the way.

We rode a tandem, outfitted with a BOB trailer, pulling "luggage" for four, and it turned out to be a nice little workout (of course the wife isn't a rider, so that may have had something to do with it).

For a relatively close to home ride, where you only have to worry about car traffic at the old rail crossings, you can't go wrong with the Little Miami Trail system.
