XC racing returns to North Vernon's Muscatatuck State Park this weekend. Only about an hours drive from Louisville, it's a nice race course (if memory serves me correct, I think I can do the whole loop without clipping out of my pedals).
Visit the DINO site if there's heavy showers/rain leading up to the race, to make sure the event is still on.
Edit- or "call the DINO Hotline at 317-336-7553 if any questionable weather may cause delay or cancellation of the race."

Muscatatuck offered a wide variety of challenges, some fast "up & downs," tight twisty single-track, and smooth flowing trails.
The rain leading up to race day actually offered a "technical" element. Tire selection, air pressures and just how hard to push in the corners (and over slick log crossings) entered into the equation.
While it's nice to race (or in my case, almost die just completing 3 laps) in perfect dry (and often times overly dusty) conditions, a little rain before (and sometimes during) the event adds an additional element. When you're finished the mud covering you and your bike let you know you've just completed a mountain bike race.
Note- you can set your watch by DINO start times, so don't arrive late, thinking that the start will be several minutes past the published times. I made a leisurely drive up to North Vernon, with the cruise set on a fuel-saving 65mph, stopped for a Polar Pop, and restroom break, and pulled into the parking lot all of 10 minutes before the start of my age group. By the time I unloaded the bike, slipped on my shoes, and made it over to register, it was only seconds before the start. I actually started just a few seconds late, and was still pulling my gloves on and snapping the hydration pack shut while riding back into the trail.
