Hi, my name is Robin and I am on the verge of coming home to Lexington after three years in Maine. I moved to the Portland area of Maine for law school. Quickly realizing that these people here are MARKEDLY different from people in Kentucky I realized I had to do something to survive up here, beyond just riding my horses. I picked up alpine skiing and am starting to do slalom racing. Once ski season ended, I picked up mountain biking and am loving it. I also picked up a Mainer, who will be coming to Kentucky with me in the fall (once I pass the Bar and can start to practice law). He has been very nervous about relocating to Kentucky, for fear that he will have to basically give up mountain biking. I found you guys on the web and am hopeful that you can tell me that he should not fear, and that there are plenty of trails and places to mountain bike within a relatively close distance to Lexington. I was thinking that around Berea, Athens, Boonesboro, Tates Creek and Harrodsburg there would be something. Is there? Any help you can give with places to ride that are not the Gorge would be greatly appreciated. Also, does Perfect North in Indiana open up to mountain bikers? The bigger ski resorts in Maine (Sunday River and Sugarloaf) do; just wondering if that is a relatively common practice for the Southern ski resorts as well. Thanks for reading, and any help or suggestions you can give will be GREATLY appreciated!

Robin, Welcome back. There
Robin,
Welcome back. There are many good mtn. bike trails in Kentucky, from Cave Run Lake in the east to Land Between the Lakes in the west. Here in Lexington, we have the Veteran's Park trails in the Tates Creek area. Frankfort is only 30 minutes away, and Capital View park is a local favorite. There are also trails around Louisville, Northern Kentucky, and Tennessee is only 3 hours away. As far as ski resorts go, Snowshoe in WV offers summer mtn. biking. I don't think Perfect North or Paoli do. Tell your friend not to worry, Kentucky has plenty of outdoor activities.
For a trail list, check out Singletrack.net. Also, the local bike shops are a great source for more info. I would recommend Pedal the Planet (PedalthePlanet.com) as one place to start.
Happy Riding!
Hey thanks so much for the
Hey thanks so much for the info...I will pass it along to Kory. Hopefully we will be able to ride together sometime soon. Hoping to be down in August once I take the Bar Exam and sell my house here. Let me tell you that it has been and will continue to be TORTURE up here, knowing my return is right around the corner!!!!
There's no place like home...
Just curious about what is
Just curious about what is so bad/different about Mainers?
