recommended bike trails in Northern Kentucky

Posted in

Hi,
We are from Maine and are working in the Cincinnati area for the next 10 days. We have the weekend off and would likie to do some riding on our mountain bikes in the Northern K. area as far south as Bardstown. Trails that are not overly technical. Trails that we would be able to take in the scenery. Thanks a lot. Any suggestions would be appreciated. It's all overwhelming.

We have been on the Miami Bike Trail in the past but we are looking for something a bit more rustic.

There are a few parks in Louisville you could check out, Don could fill you in, Otter creek, that I know of and if you go east there's Cave Run. If you come here we have the Caney Loop that's 10 miles in length that's fast and rolling beside of Cave Run Lake. We also have lakeview, but it requires some climbing.

Midway between Cincy and Louisville is Bike Butler (visit the Ky State Park website and look under General Butler State Park). You'll definitely need a mountain bike, and some off road skills. The loop is around 5.5 to 6 miles, and has a combination of flowing trails, with a little technical mixed in. (Butler is the state's former attempt at running a ski resort, so be prepared for a little bit of climbing.) If you visit Butler, you can find a trail head across from the recreation center, which is directly across the road from the golf course club house.

There's virtually no Rails to Trails available here in KY (such as the Little Miami mentioned in your post). If you make it down to Louisville, we have trails in Cherokee Park, Waverly Park, and Fort Duffield, just outside the city limits, in Westpoint. A little farther down the road is Otter Creek Park (2,600 acres) in Brandenburg.
