I was told recently about the rails to trails in Central City--6 miles to Greenville. I was curious where the trailhead is located? I have never been to Central City or Greenville, but thought this would be a fun outing for the kids and I sometime. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good place to eat in Greenville before turning around and riding back to Central City? I think Lake Malone is nearby with camping, too.
I guess no one from that
I guess no one from that area lurks this site. Oh well, I like exploring!
Okay, here's my review: I
Okay, here's my review:
I took my two boys to the Central City/Greenville rail trail Saturday. We started at the Greenville end of the trail which turned out to be the tourist friendly end of the trail to start. It was a paved trail and VERY FLAT. It is supposed to be 6 miles one way, but it only took us an hour to get to Central City and back. That would be 12 mph. Guess my kids can ride flat pavement faster than I thought. I did not have a computer on the bike I was riding so I was unable to check mileage. However, there are mile markers painted on the path to let you know how far you have gone. It was chilly and so we just rode without stopping, but there were places to stop to look at the wildlife among the marshes to the sides of the trail. It is probably beautiful in the spring, but being winter it was just bleak and marshy looking. We saw herons, rabbits, owl pellets, and evidence of beavers all without having to stop. This would be a great little outing if you are a local or travelling thru the area with beginner bikers. I thought the trail was short and the Central city end was an abrupt end in the back of an old neighborhood with no direction how to get to the hoppin side of town (restaurants). Back at the Greenville/Powderly end (where we parked), there are plenty of places to eat, an old caboose for the kids to climb on, and a cute little bridge for a picture! All in all, it's great for the locals, or a nice little outing to add to a trip if you are already in the area.
