Today’s Courier-Journal had a great article about the Civilian Conservations Corps. They’re having their national reunion this weekend at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, near Corbin Ky.
Back during the great depression, when unemployment was around 25%, Roosevelt’s New Deal included formation of the CCC, which was designed to provide jobs and skills training to thousands of unemployed men between the ages of 17 & 25.
About 80,000 Kentuckians participated in the CCC, and nearly 100 CCC camps were built in the commonwealth alone.
IMBA’s Trail Care Crew often makes mention of some of the well-built trails by the CCC, many of which are still in existence today. The Womble Trail in AR is one of the better known.
CCC workers planted over 5 BILLION trees to stem erosion and restore blighted forests, in addition to building 60,000 buildings and creating 800 national and state parks.
