What do you think about this road bike?

Posted in

mid 90's trek 2100 carbon fiber composite frame with 105 components and and a easton ec30 carbon fiber fork. I bought it last year and I am thinking about a upgrade to that fuji team bike. 350.00 and it is yours

I'm not in a hurry to purchase anything yet, but I would like some feedback from other members that know a lot more about road bikes as compared to myself. Should I get a used bike or save up a little longer and get a new bike so I know exactly what I'm getting. I would like to get a bike that doesn't cost a lot to see if I enjoy road biking and if I do I would like to purchase a new bike. I just want something to ride when the trails are wet.

I would rather get a bike through the LBS, but a sport bike would cost twice as much. He has been good to me, but I can't afford it right now. Not sure if I get the trek listed above, not get a road bike right now since the weather will be getting warm soon and I can ride the trails (it would also allow me to save up money for a new road bike), or fix up an abandoned 10 speed bike that was left on campus. Those are my options.

That bike looks good and that price seems alright. Only things I see needing changed to make it better are some matching wheels, new tires and a better seat. After buying the needed stuff the total amount spent on the bike would equal an amount that could possibly get you an even better used road bike that doesn't need anything....

what size is it?

got one

I had one just a little older than that. It was the year the paint was more of a purple color. It was a nice ride. The only negative thing is all the stuff is old on it. If it has been road a lot, then stuff starts wearing out.

I just switched frames this year and most of my components went to my new bike. But, I sure would like to have some stuff replaced soon.

The bike looks plenty good

The bike looks plenty good to me.

If it shifts OK, and the chain/cassette is in good shape, you should be good to go.

The most important thing in cycling is the engine driving the cranks. But if you need or want something newer and nicer, that's understandable, as my current road bike is far beyond my ability, but it still makes me feel good to own it!

It's 58 cm. I doubt I'll get it now that I think about it. I talked to John at the shop yesterday and I don't know the history of the bike so I have no clue how many miles are on it. Gatman also mentioned that. If the bike has a lot of miles then it would cost me more in repairs than what the bike is worth. John mentioned that he would keep an eye out for a good used road bike and Jamis will be clearing out their warehouse. I don't have a date on that, but I think I'll wait it out to see what happens. I would like to get a bike off John.
Oh yea, ATV smurf check out craiglist.org and see if you can find a road bike to fit you. I saw a F-90 05 felt on it for 360 bucks. Maybe you can find something in your size. Since you're tall you should be able to find a deal on a road bike.

Road bike game plan

Rod's picture

I believe I have a game plan now. While I'm saving up money, which may take me a little while, I'll see if John will be able to find me something more affordable. I don't want to spend a fortune on my first road bike because I'm not sure I'll even enjoy it. If he can't find anything I may look around Craiglist, nearby shops, or get the bike I posted above. He told me he put new tires on it Czar. OH yea, ATVsmurf I checked craiglist and I didn't see anything in your size in the nearby area. You should be able to find an amazing deal on a bike since you're tall. If I see one in my search I'll let you know. If anyone else has a better game plan please inform me.

How's the road bike project coming?

I know it's hard to wait but don't get something that you will want to upgrade in 6 months. It's pretty obvious that you are going to be in this sport for the duration. It kinda gets in your blood and slowly takes you over until you would rather buy a new bike part than gas for your truck. It's a sickness really.

Bike project

Everything is on hold as of now. I'm waiting to see if Jamis contacts John with some new models from the warehouse on clearance. John has been good to me and I would like to give him as much business as possible. I don't have a lot of money for a bike at this time, but I hope that will change as summer comes. Classes will be over in roughly three weeks and I'll be able to work more. I recently rented a place in Morehead (for the summer) and it broke the bank. I've been trying to look around a lot lately to see what my options are. I honestly know nothing about road bikes so I'm trying to learn something about them before I purchase one. My dream is to find someone who didn't enjoy road biking and they're selling a low mileage bike. I'm also debating on fixing up an old abandoned road bike until I can save up for one. I looked at it the other day and it has a few problems. The front wheel is warped, rear derailler doesn't work (weak springs so the chain jumps), and both gear cables are frozen. I was thinking about converting it into a single speed. You're definitely right about me not wanting to purchase something that I will want to upgrade in 6 months. Any input is greatly appreciated.

What type of road bikes do you own or would recommend? I may have to ride the singlespeed or my mountain bike on the road for a while.

John has been good to me also. I wish I could have given my buisness to him when buying a road bike. I couldn't afford to get what I wanted from a shop. I found a deal on ebay that I couldn't pass up. It was a full ultegra Cannondale caad5 with kyserium elite wheels for 850.00. This would have cost me 3000.00 at a shop. I can't say enough about John, he is a great guy and I buy all of my parts and clothing from him, I just couldn't afford three grand.

I know what you mean. I plan on buying a pair of cycling shorts off him very soon, but the new road bike prices are ridiculous. A beginning road bike costs 200 more dollars than my decent mountain bike. 650 dollars for a Giant OCR 3 or something like that. That's hard for me to grasp. I plan on shopping around, but I'm trying to hold out hope for a warehouse clearance before I get the money saved up. I will probably have to find something on ebay in the end. I want you and others to see it before I get it since I know little to nothing about them.

Rod, email Don Fields at Pro-Fitness in Prestonsburg and ask him about possible used road bikes in your size. There are a whole bunch of roadies based out of Pro-Fitness and some have multiple bikes. Could be something available in your desired wallet range....

profitnesscntr at bellsouth dot net is Don's email address....

I went to ebay to look around. Just typed in 53cm and 54cm in the search and most of the results were road bike related....
