Pike and Floyd area trailwork...

Posted in

We need to work on some of the trails in this area...Rod, Czar and anyone else far removed from the interstate highways...and we also need to work together to try to get some new trails...or at the least get together for some riding, or start doing some scheduled rides...we tried doing Saturday rides here in Pikeville last year, and may start doing something again soon.

I have for a few years and currently take care of the designated mountain bike trails area at Jenny Wiley. Once in a long while the park employees will mow but not much because it's not needed very often. I know of two occasions the last five years or so where they cleared water bars on their time. I keep the 1.7 mile Short Loop/Switchback Loop combination trail clear. Got some slight work to do there next couple of days from where the gas line company messed up some stuff when they scraped all the way to the gas line clearing and there's about a quarter of a shopping bag of fall/winter left behind trash that I plan on picking up. Some reallllllllllly deep leaves covered sections will get raked also and limbs cleared. The Beginner trail I don't mess with but may give it a ride through to clear and pick up stuff if needed. The parking area is now different also and you can no longer just ride in around the gate and take off up the hill due to a new deep water bar the gas line company dug in to make the water runoff go more directly into the ditch. When you're over there riding the trails and notice not many limbs, notice no or minimal trash and hit cleared trail areas where leaves were up to your knees you now know how those limbs stay off the trails, garbage goes bye bye and how the leaves go poof!!!! :)

I'm all for more rides in groups over here in eastern Kentucky. It's all about getting people together at the same time and getting people to drive to different areas to ride with others. We're all spread out in the hills over here. Seems due to differences in riding times and distances apart we all wind up riding solo. The last time I rode with another rider was last October when we rode as a group there in Pikeville....

I'll definitely help with clearing the trails, expansion projects, and go for weekend rides. I'm currently at Morehead going to college, but p-burg is roughly 60 miles away. I won't be home this weekend, but next so that is a good time for me.

Let me know when you're going to work on the Jenny Wiley trails and I'll help ya. The leaves are deep in a few places right now. I have a monster rake that can solve the problem. :)

Like Czar I take care of the small Garfield trail. Last year I cut three trees out of the trail. It wasn't even rideable last summer.

I would love to get together with both of you and find other places to ride. I could probably bring a friend who lives at Maytown. Just get back to me.
