So I'm from Eastern KY although I live in Louisville, I'm heading home this weekend and thinking of taking the road bike instead of hte mtb (because it may rain, although the visitor's center is fine even after a hurricane) anyway I've mapped out a fun looking route from my Fraternity house in Clearfield. Backroads to Cave run and back on 60, someone let me know if these roads are paved and rideable or if you wouldn't advise even trying, I know there are some locals on here.
URL for this route is: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=725703
Thanks,
Pat
Sorry
I wish I could help. I'm from the Morehead area but I suck at maps and I don't know those roads. Normally we would be riding road or mtbikes in this area but we are meeting my brother in law in Lexinton tomorrow and riding road there. Hopefully we'll catch you next time and you can ride with us.
Gonzo can probably help you with your question if he sees your post.
Problem with your route
I'm also from the Morehead area and I examined your route with one of my maps. The problem is "Clack Mountain West Road" is gravel. That road takes you to Lockegee rock, which is more well known around here. I've ridden that route on my mountain bike before and you could have taken a road bike on it then, but I'm not sure if they have graveled it since then. If they have here's my suggestion. I would just travel further down 1274 to 801. Then you can circle back. I suggest 1274 instead of 519 because you may not even see a car on 1271, but if traffic doesn't bother you I'm sure 519 would be faster. I just mapped the route I suggest and it's 26 miles as compared to your old route, which is 22 miles. I hope this helps. Here's the url to my route. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=726958
Rod is correct.
Clack Mountain is a gravel road and I would not take a road bike on it. Watch 60 as it has a lot of traffic, so does 519 and 801. These will not be as bad as you will see in L'ville, but not like the back roads. I would do this route or the last one I posted on KyMBA. If the bike shop is open get one of Johns route book.
John shop opens March 1st.
John shop opens March 1st. Gonzon is right about not taking a road bike on the gravel road. I just remembered the last time I was on that road with my semi-slicks I slid across it and almost crashed. Not sure why I said it would be okay for you to ride your road bike on it. I'll blame it on brain fog.
If you bring the mtb.
Park at Visitor Center ride up the Sheltowee till the intersection of the Lakeview trail. Take it down to the forest road. Turn right and go till 801. Turn left on 801 and take it to Clack Mountain Road (across from the Twin Knobs campground). Follow the gravel road for ever, well not really but to the last gravel road on the left (just before the road meets a blacktop road). This FS ends into the Limestone trail and takes you back to the Sheltowee at the last wild life pond. Turn left and it will take you back to the Visitor Center. This route is about 20 miles.
