Camping & the Rest Room

Posted in

Several people have recently commented on a desire to get in some camping time this year. Be it backpacking or a deep ride into the woods on your bike, there remains the basic question (when no facilities are available) how do you dispose of your waste?

I've heard it said that no surface drinking water in the WORLD is completely safe to consume, due in large part to fecal waste.

Just a sip or two of contaminated water could invite a wide variety of enteric pathogens.

Do you dig a deep hole, well away from any water ways and bury it? Do you BOB trailer in your porta-potty and cart it back out? Or do you go w/a less expensive version and use some 4" dia. PVC piping (w/screw on ends of course) to transport it out?

Your waste product, even under the best (of buried) conditions can take up to a year to decompose. A lack of bacterial activity in the soil may well mean that you've marked your spot, for ever!

If there's several in the group, do you make your own latrine, and just cut loose w/the occasional poop-party? (Just try to get EPA approval for that!)

Once we determine the most effective and efficient environmentally sound way to solve this dilema, we'll move on to next topic: peeing for fun and recreation.
